These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
