Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 in which you are now living 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 Or to the poor man lying in the dust. 16 the believers who cooperate with others in patience (steadfastness) and kindness. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
