Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Clear Book. 2 We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
