The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 arise, and warn! 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 thy robes purify 4 and defilement flee! 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 Then he turned back and was arrogant 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
