We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds." 46 But when he came to them with Our signs, lo! they laughed at them. 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 (Whenever they faced an affliction) they would say: “O magician, pray for us to your Lord according to your station with Him. We shall certainly be guided to the Right Way.” 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 And said Firaun, “O my people! Is not the kingdom of Egypt for me, and these rivers that flow beneath me? So do you not see?” 51 "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?" 53 So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allah]. 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 And We made them a precedent and example to the later generations. 56
