Jonah too was one of the messengers. 139 He abandoned his people 140 cast lots, and was among the losers. 141 And a fish swallowed him, and he was reproaching himself. 142 Had it not been that he (repented and) glorified Allah, 143 he would certainly have remained inside the fish until the Day of Resurrection. 144 ۞ Then We cast him on to the vacant surface of the earth while he was sick. 145 And We grew a tree of gourd (as a shelter) above him. 146 And We sent him to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more. 147 They believed in him so We granted them enjoyment for an appointed time. 148 Now ask thou them: are there for thy Lord daughters and for them sons? 149 Have We created the angels as females before their very eyes? 150 Is it not of their own calumny that they say, 151 “Allah has begotten.” They are liars! 152 Has He (then) chosen daughters rather than sons? 153 What is the matter with you, how is it that you judge? 154 Will ye not then receive admonition? 155 Or is there for you a plain authority? 156 “Then bring forth your Book, if you are truthful!” 157 They assert kinship between Him and the angels. But the angels know that they (the liars) will be arraigned (in Hell). 158 God is far above what they attribute to Him, 159 except the servants of God, sincere and devoted. 160 Therefore you and all what you worship. (The disbelievers and their deities.) 161 Can tempt anyone to rebel against Him. 162 unless it be such as rushes towards the blazing fire [of his own accord]! 163 Of us there is none but hath a station assigned. 164 We are surely those who are arranged in ranks. 165 "And we are verily those who declare (Allah's) glory!" 166 And there were those who said, 167 "If only we had a tradition [to this effect] from our forebears, 168 Surely we would have been the bondmen of God sincere. 169 But (now that the Qur'an has come), they reject it: But soon will they know! 170 Already Our Word has preceded to Our servants, the Envoys; 171 will certainly be victorious 172 And verily Our host! they are to be overcome. 173 Hence, turn thou aside for a while from those [who deny the truth,] 174 And see [what will befall] them, for they are going to see. 175 Would they hasten on Our doom? 176 So when it does descend in their courtyards – so what an evil morning it will be for those who were warned! 177 And turn away from them for some time. 178 and see, soon they shall see! 179 Glorified be thy Lord, the Lord of Majesty, from that which they attribute (unto Him) 180 And peace be on the apostles. 181 And all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. 182
