We sent Moses to the Pharaoh and his nobles with Our miracles and he said, "I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Universe". 46 Yet when he brought forth Clear Signs from Us, then lo, they burst into laughter. 47 although each sign that We showed them was weightier than the preceding one: and [each time] We took them to task through suffering, so that they might return [to Us]. 48 And they said: O wizard! Entreat thy Lord for us by the pact that He hath made with thee. Lo! we verily will walk aright. 49 When We relieved them from the torment they suddenly turned back on their heels. 50 And Fir'awn proclaimed among his people, saying: O my people! is not mine the dominion of Misr and witness yonder rivers flowing underneath me? See ye not? 51 Am I not better than this contemptible man who can hardly make his meaning clear? 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allah]. 54 Then when they provoked Our wrath, We took revenge on them and drowned every one of them. 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
