Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or the giving of food in a day of hunger 14 of an orphaned relative 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
