Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha Mim! 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
