The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 arise and give warning! 2 And proclaim the Purity of your Lord. 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 and defilement flee! 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 but unto thy Sustainer turn in patience. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 Verily he considered, and devised. 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 Then he considered [again]; 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 This is not but the word of a human being." 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 scorching the flesh; 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
