a good many of olden times, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
