The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 And the moon when it follows the sun, 2 And by oath of the day when it reveals it 3 and by the night when it enshrouds him! 4 And by the heaven and Him Who built it; 5 The earth and its spreading out, 6 By the soul and Him Who propertioned it, 7 And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- 8 Surely blissful is he who hath cleansed it, 9 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. 10 The Thamud tribe rejected the truth because of their arrogance, 11 When among them the great wretch arose, 12 The Messenger of God told them, "This is a she-camel, belonging to God. Do not deprive her of her share of water". 13 However, they rejected him and slew her. So their Lord completely destroyed them and their city for their sins. 14 He does not fear the consequence. 15
