A company of the former peoples 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
