The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 arise and warn, 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 But may he be cursed how he plotted; 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then he looked around, 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
