Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
HA MIM. 1 By the clear Book, 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. 9 Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
