A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Therefore (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
