The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the Star when it plunges, 1 your companion is not in error nor has he gone astray. 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 This is naught but a revelation revealed, 4 He was taught by one Mighty in Power, 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 Thereafter he drew nigh, then he let himself down. 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him another time 13 by the lote-tree of the farthest limit, 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord. 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 These are nothing but names which ye have devised,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!- Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord! 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
