Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Clear Book. 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
