Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha'. Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 therein every wise bidding 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Aye! they're in doubt sporting. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
