In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who are wrapped up in your mantle, 1 keep vigil the night, except a little 2 For half the night, or reduce some from it. 3 Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones. 4 Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, legal laws, etc.). 5 Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words. 6 Indeed, for you by day is prolonged occupation. 7 And remember thou the name of thy Lord, and devote thyself to Him with an exclusive devotion. 8 Lord of the east and the west! No God is there but He! Wherefore take Him for thy trustee. 9 Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. 10 And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little. 11 We have fetters (for them) and a blazing fire, 12 food which chokes (them), and a painful torment. 13 On the Day when the earth and the mountains will be in violent shake, and the mountains will be a heap of sand poured out and flowing down. 14 Surely We have sent to you an Apostle, a witness against you, as We sent an apostle to Firon. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger; so We seized him with a heavy Punishment. 16 If you persist in disbelieving, how will you guard yourself against the (woe of the) Day that will turn children grey-haired, 17 the Day whose severity shall cause the heaven to split asunder? Allah's promise is ever bound to be fulfilled. 18 Surely this is a reminder, then let him, who will take the way to his Lord. 19
