A crowd of earlier generations 39 and a good many of later times. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 “We have been penalised; 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
