The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 stripping away his skin, 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 and guard their private parts 29 Are free of blame, 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
