Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the dawn; 1 And ten nights, 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 Consider the night as it runs its course! 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 And multiplied therein corruption. 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 Serene soul, 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 enter My Paradise! 30
