The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 Upon the disbelievers – the punishment that none can avert. 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 stripping away his skin, 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 except those who are steadfast 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
