Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
