He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 Because the blind man came unto him. 2 You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself, 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 Yet you pay attention 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 and fearfully, 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 and whosoever wills, shall remember it. 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Noble and dutiful. 16 Perish Man! How unthankful he is! 17 From what did He create him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 then the way eased for him, 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 Thereafter We cleave the earth in clefts, 26 And We made corn grow, 27 And grapes and herbage, 28 and olive trees and date palms 29 And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 AND SO, when the piercing call [of resurrection] is heard 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 (Many) faces on that day shall be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise). 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
