And indeed, We created man from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud. 26 And the jinn We created before from scorching fire. 27 And lo! Thy Sustainer said unto the angels: "Behold, I am about to create mortal man out of sounding clay, out of dark slime transmuted; 28 "So, when I have fashioned him completely and breathed into him (Adam) the soul which I created for him, then fall (you) down prostrating yourselves unto him." 29 then the angels all prostrated themselves together. 30 Not so Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated themselves. 31 The Lord inquired: "Iblis! What is the matter with you that you did not join those who prostrated?" 32 "How could I bow," said he, "before a mortal whom You created from fermented clay dried tingling hard?" 33 (Allah) said: 'Begone, you are accursed! 34 and the curse shall be on you till the Day of Judgement!" 35 He said: My Lord! then respite me till the time when they are raised. 36 (Allah) said: "Respite is granted thee 37 until the day of a known time." 38 He said: My Lord! Because Thou hast sent me astray, I verily shall adorn the path of error for them in the earth, and shall mislead them every one, 39 "Except Thy servants among them, sincere and purified (by Thy Grace)." 40 Said Allah, “This path* leads straight towards Me.” (* The path of the chosen bondmen.) 41 and you have no authority over My servants except the erring ones who follow you. 42 and for all such, behold, hell is the promised goal. 43 with seven gates leading into it, each gate receiving its allotted share of sinners. 44
