The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 Dragging by the head, 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 who guard their privates 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 and (finally) those who do not miss their ritual - prayers at the prescribed times; 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
