The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 And [by] the moon when it follows it 2 By the day when it glorifieth it. 3 and by the night when it draws a veil over it, 4 By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure; 5 by the earth and Who spread it, 6 by the soul and how He formed it, 7 And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- 8 He who purifies it will indeed be successful, 9 and truly lost is he who buries it [in darkness]. 10 Thamud (people) denied (their Prophet) through their transgression (by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism, and by following polytheism, and by committing every kind of sin). 11 when their arch-criminal rose up in rage. 12 And the apostle of God had to tell them: "This is God's she-camel, let her drink." 13 Then they belied him and they hamstrung her; wherefore their Lord overwhelmed them for their crime, and made it equal. 14 He did not fear the consequences. 15
