The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the sun and its morning brightness, 1 and the moon as it reflects the sun! 2 The day when it reveals his radiance, 3 And the night when it draws a veil over it, 4 By the heaven and That which built it 5 and by the earth and That which extended it! 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 Then He inspired it to understand what is right and wrong for it; 8 He will indeed be successful who purifies it, 9 and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness). 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 When the most unfortunate of them broke forth with 12 Then the messenger of God said to them, "This is God's she-camel. Let her drink." 13 Then they belied him and they hamstrung her; wherefore their Lord overwhelmed them for their crime, and made it equal. 14 God is not afraid of the result of what He had decreed. 15
