The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Alif-Lam-Ra. These are the verses of the Book, and a Qur'an luminous. 1 Often will those who disbelieve wish that they had been Muslims. 2 leave them to eat, and to take their joy, and to be bemused by hope; certainly they will soon know! 3 And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree. 4 No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter. 5 They say: 'Thou, upon whom the Remembrance is sent down, thou art assuredly possessed! 6 Why dost thou not bring before us angels, if thou art a man of truth? 7 We do not send down angels except for a genuine purpose, at which time none will be given any further respite. 8 Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Quran) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption). 9 Indeed, We sent Messengers before thee, among the factions of the ancients, 10 and never yet came an apostle to them without their deriding him. 11 Thus do We make it traverse the hearts of the guilty: 12 they do not believe in it. This has been the wont of people of this kind from ancient times. 13 And even if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they were to continue ascending thereto, 14 They would only say: "Our eyes have been intoxicated: Nay, we have been bewitched by sorcery." 15
