The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Cloaked one, 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 And stay away from idols. 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 and to whom I have granted resources vast, 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 But may he be cursed how he plotted; 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 Then looked he, 21 Then frowned and grimaced. 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 For We have caused none but angelic powers to lord over the fire [of hell]; and We have not caused their number to be aught but a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth - to the end that they who have been granted revelation aforetime might be convinced [of the truth of this divine writ]; and that they who have attained to faith [in it] might grow yet more firm in their faith; and that [both] they who have been granted the earlier revelation and they who believe [in this one] might be freed of all doubt; and that they in whose hearts is disease and they who deny the truth outright might ask, "What does [your] God mean by this parable?" In this way God lets go astray him that wills [to go astray,] and guides aright him that wills [to be guided]. And none can comprehend thy Sustainers forces save Him alone: and all this is but a reminder to mortal man. 31
