Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 And the Even and the Odd, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Have you not heard how your Lord dealt with Aad? 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me." 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 And you love wealth with much love! 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 O the contented soul! 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 into My Paradise. 30
