Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 "Therefore fear Allah and obey me." 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They replied: 'Surely, you are one of those bewitched. 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 "And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
