Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim 1 By the clear Book, 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. 20 And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many were the gardens, springs, 25 And crops and noble sites 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
