The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By oath of the night when it covers 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 and That which created the male and the female, 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 And for him who hoarded wealth and remained carefree, 8 And rejects goodness, 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 I have now warned you of the Blazing Fire, 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
