Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Kaf-Ha-Ya-'Ain-Sad. 1 This is an account of your Lord's mercy bestowed upon His servant Zachariah, 2 when he cried to his Lord in secret. 3 Praying: "O my Lord! infirm indeed are my bones, and the hair of my head doth glisten with grey: but never am I unblest, O my Lord, in my prayer to Thee! 4 And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir 5 to be my heir and to be the heir [of the blessings] of the House of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord, acceptable to you." 6 We answered his prayers with the glad news of the birth of a son by the name of John and told him, "We have never given such a name to anyone else." 7 He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?" 8 Answered [the angel]: "Thus it is; [but] thy Sustainer says, 'This is easy for Me - even as I have created thee aforetime out of nothing'". 9 He said, "My Lord, grant me a sign!" He said, "Your sign will be that you will not speak to anyone for three successive days and nights, although sound in body." 10 So he came out to his people from the prayer chamber and signaled to them to exalt [Allah] in the morning and afternoon. 11 We commanded John, Zachariah's son, to follow the guidance of the Lord with due steadfastness. We gave knowledge and wisdom to John during his childhood. 12 And piety (for all creatures) as from Us, and purity: He was devout, 13 honoring his parents, being neither arrogant nor rebellious. 14 And Peace be unto him the day he was born and the day he dieth and the day he will be raised up alive. 15
