The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn, 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 and purify your clothing, 4 and flee from the statues! 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 it will be a hard day 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then looked he, 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
