The Thamud tribe denied the Noble Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
