Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And ten nights, 2 The multiple and the one, 3 and by the passing night, 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 whose like has never been created in any other land. 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 [It was they] who transgressed all bounds of equity all over their lands, 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 Indeed nothing is hidden from the sight of your Lord. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust, 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 And enter among My [righteous] servants 29 And enter into My garden. 30
