The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
And by the sun and its brightness; 1 And the moon when she followeth him, 2 Consider the day as it reveals the world, 3 and the night as it veils it darkly! 4 And the heaven and Him Who built it, 5 And the earth and Him Who extended it, 6 by the soul and how He formed it, 7 And given the faculty of knowing what is disruptive and what is intrinsic to it. 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 And he fails that corrupts it! 10 Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression, 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 then the Messenger of God said to them, 'The She-camel of God; let her drink!' 13 Then they belied him and they hamstrung her; wherefore their Lord overwhelmed them for their crime, and made it equal. 14 He dreadeth not the sequel (of events). 15
