In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O you wrapped in garments (i.e. Prophet Muhammad SAW)! 1 Rise to pray in the night except a little, 2 of one-half thereof - or make it a little less than that, 3 Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones. 4 We shall soon entrust to you a message heavy (with solemnity). 5 Lo! the vigil of the night is (a time) when impression is more keen and speech more certain. 6 whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. 7 And remember the Name of thy Lord, and devote thyself unto Him very devoutly. 8 (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs. 9 And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. 10 And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little. 11 Indeed We have heavy fetters and a blazing fire. 12 choking food and a painful punishment. 13 On a Day whereon the earth and the mountains shall quake, and the mountains shall become a sand-heap poured forth. 14 We have indeed sent a Noble Messenger towards you, a present witness over you – the way We had sent a Noble Messenger towards Firaun. 15 Then Fir'awn disobeyed the apostle, wherefore We laid hold of him with a painful hold. 16 If you persist in denying the truth how will you escape the Day that will turn the children's hair grey. 17 [the Day] on which the skies shall be rent asunder, [and] His promise [of resurrection] fulfilled? 18 Surely this is a Reminder; so let him who will take unto his Lord a way. 19
