Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the Dawn, 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 And the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And (with) Firon, the lord of hosts, 10 Those who rebelled in the cities, 11 and exceeded in corruption therein. 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 "And enter you My Paradise!" 30
