The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Does He think that no one will ever have control over him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 Or the giving of food in a day of hunger 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
