The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 and flee from the statues! 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 20 He looked (at others); 21 frowned and scowled; 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
