The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
I swear by the sun and its brilliance, 1 And by the moon as it follows it (the sun); 2 And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness; 3 And by the night as it conceals it (the sun); 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 The earth and its spreading out, 6 And by Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul, etc.), and Him Who perfected him in proportion; 7 and how it is imbued with moral failings as well as with consciousness of God! 8 Indeed successful is the one who made it pure. 9 and failed has he who seduces it. 10 Thamud belied in their exorbitance. 11 What time the greatest wretch of them rose up. 12 then the Messenger of God said to them, 'The She-camel of God; let her drink!' 13 But they rejected his statement as a lie and hamstrung the she-camel. For that crime their Lord rumbled down upon them, utterly razing them to the ground. 14 And He feared not the consequence thereof 15
