The elders of Pharaoh's people said: 'Surely this man is a skilful magician 109 who desires to expel you from your land; what do you command?' 110 They said: Put him off and his brother, and send collectors into the cities: 111 "That they bring up to you all well-versed sorcerers." 112 And the enchanters came to Firon (and) said: We must surely have a reward if we are the prevailing ones. 113 Pharaoh replied: 'Certainly, and you shall be among those who are near to me.' 114 They said: "O Moses! Either thou shalt throw [thy staff first,] or we shall [be the first to] throw." 115 He answered: "You throw [first]." And when they threw down [their staffs,] they cast a spell upon the people's eyes, and struck them with awe, and produced mighty sorcery. 116 We inspired Moses to throw his staff, and suddenly it began to swallow-up all that the magicians had (falsely) invented. 117 ۞ Thus truth was confirmed, and all that they did was made of no effect. 118 Pharaoh and his men were defeated and put to shame, 119 And the magicians flung themselves prostrate. 120 Crying: We believe in the Lord of the Worlds, 121 The Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 Said Pharaoh: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have cunningly devised in this [my] city in order to drive out its people hence! But in time you shall come to know, [my revenge]: 123 I will cut off your hands and feet on the alternate sides and crucify you all." 124 They said: "Verily, we are returning to our Lord. 125 Thou takest vengeance on us only forasmuch as we believed the tokens of our Lord when they came unto us. Our Lord! Vouchsafe unto us steadfastness and make us die as men who have surrendered (unto Thee). 126
