The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 But not so the worshippers 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 who guard their privates 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
