The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 For you, O dear Prophet Mohammed - peace and blessings be upon him, are in this city. 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 Or the giving of food in a day of hunger 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
