The Thamud tribe denied the Noble Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
